The
Springhill
Amateur
Radio
Club,
Inc. was
organized
in the
summer of
1960 as
an
off-shoot
of the
area
civil
defense
communications
operation.
Specifically,
the club
was to
operate
"Field
Day", as
a
national
emergency
preparedness
exercise,
sponsored
by the
American
Radio
Relay
League,
our
national
organization.
Charter
members
of the
club were
Charles
Russell,
W5VSU;
Harold
Stevens,
K5ELJ
(silent
key);
Gene
Winfree,
W5ADE;
Bennie
Pearson,
K5QNK;
Milton
Parker,
K5ELM
(silent
key); Val
Marshall,
K5WOD
(silent
key); and
Lavelle
Hughes,
K5TNS.
Over the
years,
the club
operated
Field Day
and held
many
simulated
emergency
tests,
also
sponsored
by ARRL.
These
activities
prepared
the
members
to
function
efficiently
in the
performance
of their
public
service
communications
responsibilities.
Members
of the
club have
on
occasions
provided
both
emergency
communication
to the
city, and
helped in
various
civic
events
with
their
communications
skills.
Of
particular
importance
is the
members'
participation
in Sky
Warn
operated
by the
National
Weather
Service.
Here
amateurs
serve as
storm
spotters
and
reporters
of
weather
information
of value
to the
National
Weather
Service.
The
Club's
license
is W5KJN,
which is
an
open
repeater
with an
autopatch
on
146.13/73.
